West Virginia Congressional Election 2016 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
1. Limiting abortion leads to unsafe illegal abortions which I have seen happen, before the Roe v. Wade supreme court decision. 2. The low income students that I taught needed every advantage to catch up. Being a teen mom often put them further behind in their education and career. 3. Kids deserve to have parents that are ready and willing to take on the responsibility of being parents. 4. At 7+ Billion humans alive today we are over populating the planet. I stopped at one child and recommend one or two children per family.
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
President and General Dwight Eisenhower warned of the military industrial complex. I've worked for peace my whole adult life. If the US had followed the advice of Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King Jr. we and the rest of the world would be safer, richer, and friendlier. When I was young the income tax rates went over to 90% for top income brackets. The growing budget deficits and income inequality threaten both our democracy and our economy.
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
I just read "Dark Money" by Linda Mayer which makes it very clear what almost everyone knows which is that big money buys elections. With the motto "Be the change you want to see in the world" I'm running a very low budget campaign. I would encourage voters to look up election spending and thing of all the wonderful things that money could be used for.
No Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yes Do you support alternatives to incarceration for certain non-violent offenders such as mandatory counseling or substance abuse treatment?
No Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders?
I'm happy that reducing mandatory minimum sentences has now become a partisan issue.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No Do you support lowering taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes Do you support providing tax incentives to businesses for the purpose of job creation?
I support lowering taxes for low and middle income earners and raising taxes on Wall Street financial transactions, the 1 % and corporations with off shore accounts.
Yes Do you support requiring states to implement education reforms in order to be eligible for competitive federal grants?
The right wing effort to privatize education will increase the gap between the rich and the rest of us.
No Do you support building the Keystone XL pipeline?
Yes Do you support funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yes Do you support increased regulations on the hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") industry?
If we got rid of all subsides for fossil fuels and renewable energy with a carbon tax to encourage a transition to a safe climate future the market would help decide which system is the best.
Yes Do you believe that human activity is contributing to climate change?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
It has become clear Exxon's scientists warned about climate change over 35 year ago but they decided to back climate denial. If a big company like Exxon had listened to their scientists in 1977 everyone would have listened. The droughts, heat waves, fires, floods, and sea level rise could have been a thing of the past. Now are job is so much harder and more expensive.
Yes Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
1. I think hunting rifles should be unregulated. I'm not a good hunter but our farm has some of the best deer pasture around with lots of Chinese Chestnut, persimmon, and oak trees plus open pasture. I butcher and freeze deer and turkeys that neighbors give to us. 2. I think banning assault weapons and regulating semi-automatic weapons and hand guns is a good idea. The US has the highest gun murder and suicide rate in the developed world. As teacher of at risk students, thirteen students died in 13 years, most were killed by gun violence.
Yes Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
West Virginians are so much better off with the ACA. Hospitals are better off too because they don't have uninsured patients who can't pay. We need Medicare for all because as long as the insurance companies and big pharma are making profits off health we can not get the savings seen in the rest of the developed world.
No Do you support requiring illegal immigrants to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Undocumented immigrants add to our economy, our culture, and we need to include them in our democracy.
Yes Do you support same-sex marriage?
The supreme court decision supporting same-sex marriage seem now to be making a happy transition into a more accepting time.
No Do you support targeting suspected terrorists outside of official theaters of conflict?
No Should the U.S use military force in order to prevent governments hostile to the United States from possessing a nuclear weapon?
How sad that the US now admits to killing innocent people in the drone attacks. We have created an endless war where our drone bombs are a major recruiting tool for those ISIS.
No Do you support allowing individuals to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into personal retirement accounts?

As well as the above we should encourage local solutions to creating meaningful work, drug free communities, ending poverty, and creating models for a safe climate future. Worker owned business, an ethic of community over consumption, and valuing our the West Virginia traditions of one hundred years ago where people grew their own food, built there own homes, and made their own music, dance, and art. Now we can add generate our own home made solar electricity to the list that makes a reality of "Mountaineers are always free".
Social Security payroll taxes should not be capped at $ 118,500 yearly income. If the rich paid the same percent tax it would make social security secure.
For greater democracy: campaign finance reform, equal TV and radio time for candidates, and extend the time between serving as legislator and lobbyist to five years. Goal - legislatures reflects income distribution of our population. To improve our economy promote legislation for: Progressive estate and income taxes, increased aid to K-12 / higher-education, Farm to School, and Farmer's Markets. We need to create a Benefit Corporation where people and planet are prioritized over profit. For a safe climate, promote legislation for: Carbon Fee and Dividend, Energy efficiency, Demand response, Integrated Resource Planning, and Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards.
